I have been admitted to hospital after the provider phoned my medical aid to get authorization for the hospital. He told my fiance every thing is arranged. I got send to George Mediclinic and was in ICU for 2 days and 2 days in normal stay. The day I get released the hospital tells me my claim is rejected. It is rendered during waiting period, but the same doctor that send me to the hospital, his bill got paid. The doctor that treated me, half of his bill is paid, the rest of his bill the codes is wrong according to Selfmed. Even my X-rays is paid for when I was in hospital. I pay my medical aid every month on time and now they wont even help me with my hospital bill. I had an asthmatic attack, so bad that not even the paramedics had hope for me. I went into a coma while they were driving me to mediclinic and only woke up there past 8. Didn't even know I was sent to hospital. But now they don`t want to pay it.

I was with selfmed for 8 years. Experienced the same issues a many of the complaints below. Ended up with an ER bill from December last year as I had nobody to phone for authorisation. Do not try and join the new Compcare / Selfmed scheme. It's a losing battle to get information, application forms, pray you not on chronic medication, or have to phone in with a query. Worse than a government department

Earlier this year correspondence was send out by Selfmed for a planned amalgamation between Selfmed and Compare, according to this correspondence we would be getting a better and stronger medical aid at a better price. We did not vote for the amalgamation because we were expected to go in blind, the options that would be available after the amalgamation was not given, nor the contributions for options going forward. This amalgamation has now been approved and new membership cards were send out. I was told that the options and the contributions would be available towards the end of October. That did not happen and I have not received a response to emails send to Selfmed. Today I went onto the Compare website and Donald gave me the options available for 2020. We have far less benefits than we previously had at a higher monthly contribution. I phoned Selfmed / Compare and the lady that answered the phone said the options for 2020 is not available yet, I told her that Donald send them to me and according to him the options that he send are the only options available. She then put me through to another lady that first said the benefits for 2020 is not available yet, when I told her I got them send to me from the Compare website, she all of a sudden had them in front of her. My complaint is this, amalgamation was never explained, the financial impact as well as the loss of benefits was never clearly outlined, Selfmed and Compare decided to amalgamate with empty promises that a better medical aid plan was in our future a better rate. I have been told to hold on and put through and told to send an email that goes unanswered one too many times since this whole thing started. It is too late now, it is what it is. I just feel that the customer / patient has yet again been fooled by empty promises from medical aids.

I joined Selfmed medical aid last year July 2018, I asked them then End of August 2019 to cancel my membership due to them not paying for things, after they said they would pay for it. I then changed my mind , asked them to rather not cancel it and just re-instate me, as I never got an email saying it was cancelled either. I have been phoning them since Monday 07.10.2019 to sort this out, I have send emails as well. First I spoke to an Agent with the name Naveen in the claims department, he said if my medical aid is cancelled their will be no problem to re-instate me. He never got back to me, so I phoned in again on Tuesday, he then asked me to forward the email to them where I asked to be cancelled, as they didn’t have it, not knowing this will be used as bait against me, he said ok he will speak to his manager and get back to me, he didn’t, so I phoned back again. He then said to me and I Quote, I am sorry but my manager says we cannot re-instate you, because now that you are pregnant you want to re-join all of a sudden??? So This is how I am being treated?? And spoken to. My husband then phoned in for me to find out what can be done, he then spoke to someone in the conurbations department, and they said but it does not show I am not active anymore, according to them I am active. Then I phoned in again to make payment arrangements and then I was told again I am not active, this has been going on for 5 days. One person says I am active the next says I am not. I phoned again this morning 11.10.2019 and spoke to someone with the name Dumi ref number 3444523, he then also said I am active as per system, and I have nothing to worry about I then requested for my membership certificate, which showed that I am still active as well, as there is no resigning date on, so I phoned in again to make sure, same was said I am active. I also phoned in to the contributions department a view times, one person also said I am active the next said I am not.. I am currently 3 weeks pregnant and this is putting so much unnecessary strain on and me and the BABY!! I just wanted to be re-instated or have an answer, but they don’t know themselves what is going on in that place. They have really put me thru enough stress and tears now, and I have had enough now. Now I want them to re-instate me, or just carry on as according to my membership certificate that was emailed to me, and according to the system and what agents has said ( Which I am sure the recordings can be pulled) I AM STILL ACTIVE. I AM NOW INSISSITNG for them to keep me as a member, and that my membership will carry on as per normal. They have put me thru hell these past 5 days, and this has caused a lot of unnecessary stress on me and my unborn child, and they will be held liable for any further emotional damages to myself and my baby.

My docter sent me for blood test, She acctualy look on the document to see if the medical aid pays for these blood test before she sent me for it. Now lancet phones me to say that this is not covered by the medical aid, I have to pay that account myself R111.10, On the Carecross form it shows that the medical aid covers this and now they do not. This is for a treatment on the 23/06/19 for HBA1C Glycated hb test. Claim Number MQK36494 My Question is why do i pay for medical aid if they do not pay for this if it is on there carecross form. This medical aid collects approximately R30 000,00 contributions per annum. This is what they pay for the visit to the optometrist: n eye test of R493.20 1 pair of generic lenses, and Frame for the maximum of R500.00 OR Contact lenses to the maximum of R900 If you really need spectacles .... please do not rely on Selfmed to pay it!
