Reliable and totally trustworthy auctioneers. Every week a river of household items goes through their rooms. Buyers can leave bids with the auctioneer and they never bid you up unnecessarily. If you have precious valuable items this is not the place to sell. But for everyday useful furniture and household items they are excellent and efficient. Full marks.

My father passed away very suddenly, leaving my mom with a 4 bedroom home full of furniture, ornaments etc. My mom, now being a widow needed to sell their home and drastically down size. We tried to give Hoffmeyer Mills retainer amounts that we felt were our baseline on items. Particularly antiques that were valuable. We also paid additional money for packing the kitchen cutlery and other items. Despite paying, packing was not done on the day. And my mom got virtually nothing for a home full of valuables. When we tried to query what went wrong and how this could have happened; we were met with defensiveness and a total lack of sympathy for my mom and her shock. Items included : Beds and bases Several antiques Artworks Desk Wardrobe Expensive mirrors Washing machine Double oven Standing oven Dishwasher Wrought iron patio furniture Among other items. Mom got R16,000 for a house full of furniture, antiques and appliances We are beyond disgusted.

Do NOT sell your items through this auction house. I was a furniture importer for ten years and recently sold some items I had left over from my 3 (large) shops. At the time I left them at Hoffmeyr I was told that they would not accept a reserve on any of the items, BUT that the auctioneer would not sell them below their value! They said that the auctioneer KNEW the values. NOT TRUE ! They sold ALL the items for next to nothing ..... I would rather have sold the items on Gumtree or FB. For example they sold a large, beautiful, recycled, carved teak coffee table for R600 and STILL charged me commission on the sale ! The coffee table was in excellent condition and on auction should reached at least between R1500-R2000. In the shop it was selling for R7000. I would rather have used the items as firewood, as firewood is more expensive ! They did not respond to my emails enquiring as to the progress of the sale, until a second email ten days later. Lousy service. Only good (maybe) for buyers, but even buyers should beware as I have attended their auctions and have seen the prices being pushed up by owners. Have seen and heard very disgruntled buyers too.

I have been an off-and-on customer of this long-standing auction house since the days when old man John Mills and his family ran it. (They all relocated to Australia.) Since then Lynn has been the front-of-desk face and this past week she really did me a very big favour. I had misheard the days of drop-off and arrived on a 'non' day with the bakkie loaded and the driver pressed for time. She was decent enough to allow us to offload and accept the goods for sale. This is against policy, but knowing what that auction house stands for, I wasn't surprised at her kindness.
