On 14 October 2020, my husband and I went to AlBaraka Bank in Rosebank Johannesburg as my husband wanted to open an Islamic bank account there. There were two bank tellers/advisors and we were ushered to the female assistant wearing a full burka. She told us that they won't open a bank account for my husband because he is from Pakistan. This is despite the fact that he has legitimate documentation and papers. She was not interested in looking at that. We asked her why Al Baraka was refusing to open an account for him based on his nationality considering the fact that this is an Islamic bank and has branches in Pakistan. She told us that the bank had listed "Pakistan as a high risk country" and won't open an account for him as a Pakistani. When we asked her how then does AlBaraka bank have branches in Pakistan she replied saying they are not branches they are subsidiaries, and they aren't connected to the Rosebank branch. What she said made no logical sense and we felt that she was clearly discriminating against him because he is a foreign national. Her behaviour was very much contrary to the principals of Islam and also against the constitution of South Africa. We subsequently went to a large South African bank that has won awards for Islamic banking and had no issue opening an account and were treated very professionally at that other bank. South Africa is a democracy where everyone should be treated with respect. Our impression of the teller was that she was xenophobic, unprofessional and a disgrace to Islam. There is no space in South Africa or anywhere in the world for hatred and racial discrimination. Foreign banks like AlBaraka should exit South Africa if they are going to conduct themselves in a unprofessional and hateful manner like Rosebank AlBaraka conducted itself on 14 October 2020. I will also report this issue to the Ombudsman for Banking Services.
Fruugo.co.za website misleading and customer service non-existent I placed an order for products through fruugo.co.za On the website when purchasing and even at the checkout it does not indicate the goods are being shipped fro overseas. It indicates short shipping times too. However, once you have paid and only then once the retailer has shipped the goods does it say the items are being shipped fro overseas (UK specifically for my order). This is misleading. I would never have purchased from this site if it had been clear on the co.za site that it was not shipping local products, particularly because South Africa's borders are closed and will be for months due to covid-19. When I tried to contact the company, I found there was no email or contact method on their website. When I did manage to send a message through it went through to the retailer that shipped the goods who replied to say it was not her problem and I should contact Fruugo. I also then went onto another Fruugo site to find a phone number but when you phone that when you click 1 for customer service it tells you that their customer service people are not connected to the call centre. I asked the retailer to give me their contact details but she did not. Instead, I just got a reply in the system now from Fruugo apparently saying that it did say the items were coming from the UK (which I know it did not) and that it would take about 14 days to arrive which I know it won't because of covid-19. The message ignored what I had said and then the ticket was closed giving me no way even to get in touch again. AVOID THIS COMPANY. THEY ARE UNETHICAL AND A COMPLETE SCAM. THEY ARE TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC WITH MISLEADING MARKETING AND CONVENIENTLY MAKE SURE YOU CAN'T CONTACT THEM.
