Beware! Product reviews are censored
I had an upsetting experience with a First Ascent hammock and mosquito net I purchased Upon facing notable quality issues with both of these products, I took to their site to leave product reviews, only to find they didn't get published I reached out via email to confront them about this, and at first they denied it stating that they don't censor reviews. However, when another representative took over the conversation, they accidentally admitted "Send the product to us, we'll inspect it and decide if we'll post the review or not" - Clearly admitting that they curate customer reviews on firstascent.co.za Caught red handed. Not only do they put out ******* quality gear, but they lie to their own customers about user ratings

Erroneous booking with no compensation
Really disappointing service from travelstart.co.za They made a mistake on their part, sending the wrong tickets (and they confirmed that it was their mistake). This was on the morning of my flight. I had to spend an hour of my workday to sort this out and it caused me a lot of stress. They offered no compensation.

Awful, Pathetic, Criminal, Outdated
Absa is the foulest, most criminal, most pathetic organization on the face of the earth. Not only do they have terrible customer service and ancient methods of handling issues, they also literally try to scam their own clients with fine print and hidden costs, and they do not stop telemarketing their own clients (they still call me to use buy their loans and upgrades, even more than a year after I closed my account). Every single issue you have, you have to "come in to the branch", don't even bother calling. And on a saturday, only 2 out of 9 customer service booths are open - When people actually might have time to go in and the queues are the longest. And you will wait for hours. They kept blocking every other transaction due to "possible fraud" - Since when is Airbnb, Inc. possible fraud? Are you kidding me?? They almost caused me to sleep on the street while travelling because of this. Multiple times. Luckily I could call my mom and borrow her card number. And don't even get me started on how pathetic the credit card department are - Their miscommunication was so bad that it took me months to get my card. Multiple emails were sent saying my card will arrive, after which it didn't, and then I had to call again to figure out what's going on, come in to the branch again, repeat the whole process. Absa will steal your money and scam you without you noticing, they will inconvenience you with their technical incompetence, but worst of all, they will waste lots and lots and lots of your TIME. I am so happy that I moved to Capitec

Capitec Bank

So simple, so amazing
What do I want from a bank? > Easy visibility & transparency over banking costs > Low banking costs > Free notifications when a transaction is made > Simple and easy to use software > Easy access to my transaction history > No fine print > No spam and telemarketing from my own bank > No standing in queues Can I just say, Capitec is a good bank. They spend time actually developing features that are useful for their app, instead of trying to figure out ways to scam their own customers like ABSA. For users that want simple banking, want to know what they are paying and want all of this info available through software, Capitec is the ONLY bank you can consider in South Africa. And they keep improving their app with features like virtual credit card and integrated masterpass. THANK YOU FOR EXISTING CAPITEC.

Bad customer support & they stole my money.
Mmmmm, where to start ... ? I'll try to summarise rather than rant, so that my review is easily readable. 1. Ordered a credit card. Got email that it will be delivered in 48 Hours. No credit card. Phoned customer support. Spent 3 hours on phone. Got another similar email. Another 48 hours later, still no credit card. Phone customer support. The two departments that I speak with start blaming each other. After more than 2 months finally got my card. 2. Overseas trip to Netherlands & Germany. I phoned ABSA and made 100% sure to notify about my travels. Credit card declined by hotel. Credit card declined in shops. Credit card declined everywhere. I almost spent the night on the street due to hotel decline. Ended up borrowing someone else's credit card, much to my embarrassment. Next day ABSA notify me in the most insincere way that the error is on their behalf. 3. Overseas trip to South Korea. I phone ABSA and notify about my travels. My card did not work once at any ATM or shop. Had to borrow money from friends, much to my embarrassment. 4. There is a transaction of R5777,00 deducted from my credit card account. I report this to ABSA. They reply and say that this is because they are phasing out MasterCard and changing to VISA. I replied and ask why this would cause a fee on my account, and they have not replied yet. I still have no clear answer. This was 3 days ago. With such a big issue, I expect immediate replies. 5. Apparently when changing MasterCard to VISA, they did not feel the need to notify me about this change, nor did they feel the need to tell me about the R5777 charge on my account. Seems like they just assume I check my transactions every week - and they are right. I do check my transactions, because I do not trust my own bank one bit. I feel sorry for the folks who did not notice this. 6. They phone me just about every 2nd day with their promotions and try to sell me loans, etc. I ask them every single time to take me off the marketing list. Then they say sure, no problem. But then they just phone again. This has been going on a couple of years now and I have accepted that they will never take me off their spam list. I wish they would rather phone to resolve my (usually serious) banking issues instead. What kind of organisation telemarkets their own clients?? Is this the year 1985? What is going on ABSA? After years of mistrust and confusion, it seems like I will have to take a leave day out of my busy schedule, gather my FICA documents, notify all my beneficiaries and go through the process of changing banks. I'm sure it will be worth the effort. **** you ABSA.

OpticNetworks Cape Town - SCAM alert!
I signed up with OpticNetworks for fibre internet. They very clearly advertised on Vumatel's shop that they will cover the R1725 Vumatel installation fee without any minimum commitment and also provide free activation. I called them and they confirmed this over the phone. I was very clear with my questions and made sure that there is no minimum commitment. Less than a month after signing up they sent me an email explaining that they "forgot" to put VAT on their prices and are upping the monthly fee from R499 to R549. After emailing them that I want to cancel my service due to the price increase, they responded saying I am liable for the R1725 Vumatel installation as well as R999 activation fee (which was never mentioned or advertised) There is something fishy going on with this business
