We were gifted a weekend away at Aasvoelkrans. We had no expectations of what the resort was like. Right from the start, you could feel that this resort is badly managed and has a very poor maintenance program. The staff working at security, the cleaners and the restaurant waiters don't have uniforms, so you don't know who is who in the resort. They are also not very friendly, willing to help. When staff are not busy, they are sitting around the resort on their phones, and some smoking (including the restaurant - they're sititng on the steps outside waiting for customers on their phones). There is no visual feel of any Management on site. There is a potent smell that wafts through the resort from the meat that is fed to the wild cats. There was a strong stagnant/sewerage/garbage smell coming from near the restaurant where we were staying. The Jacuzzis are all out of order, locked with old leaves and filth all around them. The hot pool was working well, but the cold pool next to it is leaking and smells off, like old miff water. You have to pay for the kids to use the supertube, something that should be included in your resort fees when booking with them? The "farmyard" where the ostriches are looks like a s****yard with items just thrown all over. There is danger tape wrapped around the trees. Walking up towards the staff quarters looks like you're walking into a metal s****yard too. ******* everywhere!
It was just an all-round unpleasant stay. I feel sorry for those cats that are brought in as a "tourist attractions" and you can feel they are struggling to maintain the place just to keep the cats and other caged animals going. It felt more like a zoo, than a special wild cat sanctuary.
Our accommodation was fair. The unit was clean, which we were grateful for. However, we are asked to do our own dishes but not provided with any dishwashing soap. We also were only given 1 toilet roll for a family of 4 for the whole weekend.
I will never go back unless things drastically change. It's very sad to see a resort in such a poor state.
