I was admitted to Lenmed (Ahmed Kathrada) Hospital on 12 May for issues relating to my bones and Gastro Reflux Disease. Unfortunately, my stay was extremely distressing. Below is a summary of my experience:
• I waited several hours for a bed to become available and was only accommodated after five hours. • I was woken up at 10:00 PM for a daily linen change. • The nursing staff appeared unsure of basic details, such as the day of the week, which raised concerns about medication administration. • The majority of the nurses were contract workers who also work at government hospitals through agencies on their off days at Ahmed Kathrada. They appeared exhausted and unable to provide proper care. • I, as the patient, had to try to get my medication authorized by my medical aid because the ward nurses did not know who the ward case manager was. To date, I still do not know who this person is, and I was never contacted for assistance. I was discharged on Friday evening without this being resolved. • From the day I entered the ward, a door was slammed shut multiple times per hour, both day and night, making it impossible to rest. • The toilet in my room was filthy and unusable. I reported this to the admitting nurse, who apologized. • During my stay, two patients with viral infections were placed in the same room as me, raising concerns about patient allocation and discretion. • I was required by the doctor to visit the consulting rooms, I was transported by wheelchair and golf cart, as the distance from the ward is quite far in icy cold weather.
I do not want to further frustrate myself over this incident, as I am still recovering. However, I will not return to this hospital. While we choose convenience and supporting our community, this is not the level of care one expects from a private hospital.
